The novel describes the sufferings of a nation, its youth, women and parents. It focuses on violation of human rights of the citizens and a country whose youth have become victims of slave labor, human trafficking, hostage taking, and human organ harvesting--all a result of bad governance.

The main character of the story is Miriam, a young Eritrean woman- her father Zerom Bahta Hadgembes, a veteran of the struggle who resides in America and her childhood friend Senay who wanted to marry her but ended up being conscripted.Zerom represented the generation that gave all for the liberation of Eritrea, but ended up disoriented, frustrated and face betrayals by their colleagues and finally left the country. Uprooted from their natural habitat as middle aged people, they had to adopt to alien cultures .Miriam represents the post-independence generation that went through abuse, servitude and untold sufferings under the generals of the regime and then after they fled the country to regain their freedom, became prey for the multitude of criminals.

The became hostages, suffered rape, torture and many of them ended up becoming victims of human organ harvesting.Senay represents the generation that was supposed to reap the benefits of liberation but instead became slave laborers for indefinite time, and they aged carrying guns and jumping from one battle to another robbed of all their individual rights.In brief, the book depicts the story of Eritrea and Eritreans from 1991 to 2013, 22 years of life under absolute lack of freedom and tyranny.
